Yellowbird flies again!
7 December 2009![]()
Wings Over Miami’s “Yellowbird” SGS-1-26 Glider took to the sky on Dec 5th, 2009 for its first outing since becoming a part of the Wings Over Miami family. Yellowbird was invited to the Ocean Reef Club airport for their 15th annual antique transportation show. Yellowbird was the hit of the show, being only the second glider ever to appear.
WW2 pilot Dudley Whitman donated Yellowbird to the Wings Over Miami museum in 2008 after over 20 years flying the beautiful bird. It was highlighted on the cover on of Soaring magazine in 2007. Yellowbird is a gem among the planes in the Wings Over Miami hanger.
Getting the Yellowbird back up into the air took much coordination and effort. Inspector Dick Osborne donated the needed annual inspection. The Kendall-Tamiami airport staff offered their full support to assist with the launch and retrieval. Airport manager Mike Handrahan and his crew kept the operation safe, legal, and smooth at an airport which does not normally permit glider operations. ![]()
